Recognition
In this post, we explore the concept of recognition in the context of social struggles, particularly those surrounding race, gender, and sexuality. Recognition means being seen, valued, and respected for one's identity without being stereotyped or marginalized. Recognition has been a common theme in discussions of social justice. It is assumed that struggles in these areas are fundamentally struggles for recognition. Recent critiques have sparked a renewed examination of this idea. Charles Bingham delves into the debate about the recognitive paradigm and how it applies to education. We had the pleasure of interviewing a student at Simon Fraser University who shared their perspective on how recognition plays a role in their education experiences to find out how being seen and valued by their teachers affects their motivation, sense of belonging, and engagement in the classroom environment.
